Open positions

The internship positions still open in the repository right now, grouped by provider

15 positions open 1 filled

This page is not a second position list: it is what the "open positions list" section of open-internships.md in the repository root looks like. When someone adds a position to the repository, a card will eventually appear here too. Whether a position is still open is decided by the repository; this page just saves you scrolling through 400 lines of markdown.

The list currently shows two states: open and filled. Filled ones come last; they are not deleted — filled does not mean gone, and it may open again next year. If a repository entry has only a title and still says TBA for the details, it does not go up on this page until the information is filled in.

How to apply

Email Mr Wu at wuwei@rv2036.org , following this format:

  • Subject: position number - name - phone number - school; if you have already graduated, replace "school" with part-time (current student status is basically required)
  • Body: a self-introduction relevant to the position, no more than 300 words
  • A PDF CV is mandatory — emails without one are not guaranteed a reply

Before writing, it is worth reading three pieces: "Minimalist Project Management" (how PLCT and the joint programme are run), "How we recruit interns" and "How we grade and train interns". The links are all in the same section of the repository.

Every position requires

  • A strong drive to improve, wanting to become stronger and better
  • Able to work with others actively and humbly, and to respond to teammates' messages promptly

Technical positions (development, testing, teaching assistant) additionally require:

  • By default LV2 or above (a few positions relax this to LV1 — see each card)
  • Fluent with the Linux command line and able to write simple bash scripts; comfortable using git for team collaboration
  • A basic understanding of networking: able to set up SSH to any port, port forwarding, reverse connections and ProxyCommand yourself

A few easily overlooked points

  • The open-source community is where you debut as an individual; everything you do is public, so you need a strong heart
  • The first internship contract is for three months, and you can join or leave at any time; the internship certificate runs from the contract's effective date to the actual date of departure
  • When it ends you are free to negotiate a renewal with a member company; this internship places no constraint on later internship contracts
  • Positions with "no stipend" really exist: positions such as K181–K183, funded by the lead himself, pay no stipend but provide a RISC-V development board and Token; the contract and the internship certificate are as usual

To understand how capability levels are graded and how you are assessed during the internship, see how the joint programme works ; to see where the people who took this road are now, see the intern list .

RISC-V open-source embedded system design and development

On-site internships; places on both the new-graduate engineering track and the research track

Around RISC-V processor chips developed in-house by the ECOS team or mainstream ones on the market, design PCB boards, embedded SDKs, embedded development tools and typical application cases, and write the accompanying chip manuals and board documentation. Most chips the ECOS team releases are based on open-source processor cores and open-source EDA, with the SoC integration, physical design, tape-out, packaging and board design all done in-house. The embedded team works closely with the chip team, and you can take part in chip specification definition, SoC integration and verification. Joining ECOS to work on embedded systems, you can grow into a full-stack, high-level embedded engineer who knows both software and hardware. The embedded team has plenty of room to explore all kinds of applications and try fun things — robots, embedded games, handheld consoles, smart toys and so on.

This position is offered by the ECOS team. For the internship requirements, stipend, salary and so on, see the ECOS team note on internships, new-graduate campus recruitment and experienced hiring.

This position requires on-site work: you can be employed at the Institute of Computing Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (institute establishment, project hire or Chuangjia) or at the Beijing Institute of Open Source Chip office. Software and hardware system performance analysis and optimisation

On-site internships; places on both the new-graduate engineering track and the research track

For a given algorithm or application, analyse its program behaviour, performance bottlenecks and architectural characteristics, and use high-performance computing methods — software approaches (parallel computing, vector computing, memory-access optimisation and so on), hardware-software co-design and dedicated accelerator design — to reach higher program performance with fewer hardware resources. Take the high-performance RTL simulator as an example: GSIM supports the Chisel language and is 10 times faster than Verilator, greatly improving the testing and verification efficiency of XiangShan. At present the ECOS team puts a great deal of time and effort into performance optimisation of EDA software, performance optimisation of embedded systems, and in future software optimisation on XiangShan.

ECOS Studio development

On-site internships; places on both the new-graduate engineering track and the research track

ECOS Studio: integrates the results of the whole ECOS team into one IDE toolset, designing chips entirely with open-source EDA and open-source IP, with the whole flow open-source and publicly visible. Anyone can modify and realise their own chip design on this flow without paying expensive EDA and IP fees. Every digital module written in Verilog/Chisel/SpinalHDL/SystemVerilog can use the open-source EDA and SoC to evaluate the PPA of its design in an ASIC flow, or go for tape-out once the layout is complete. ECOS Studio comes in two forms (a local IDE and a cloud platform). So students who believe in open-source chips and are also interested in UI or web development are a very good fit.

Full-time teaching assistant for the "One Student One Chip" talent programme

On-site internships; places on both the new-graduate engineering track and the research track

"One Student One Chip" (ysyx.org) is a large-scale, open, non-profit chip and systems talent programme initiated by the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences. It focuses on training students to break down and solve problems independently, and on the abilities to co-design computer hardware and software systems and to design a chip end to end. Applications are open all year, with no restriction on school, major or year. Since it started in 2019, more than 16,000 people have signed up, covering more than 1,100 universities in China and abroad. Past participants have joined leading companies in the field such as HiSilicon, Cambricon, Moore Threads, Hygon and Canaan, or gone on to further study at top institutions including CAS, Tsinghua, Peking University, HKUST and Carnegie Mellon. "One Student One Chip" has added a full-time teaching assistant position, especially suited to students who focus on deepening their technical skills, enjoy building community and like communicating with people. A full-time TA spends half their energy on improving their own technical strength and leading or joining open-source technical projects they are interested in, and half on passing the ECOS team's technical experience on to more students (mentoring and organising sharing sessions and so on).

This position is offered by the ECOS team. For the internship requirements, stipend, salary and so on, see the ECOS team note on internships, new-graduate campus recruitment and experienced hiring.

Embedded open-source RISC-V IP/SoC development

On-site internships; places on both the new-graduate engineering track and the research track

Develop low- and mid-range RISC-V open-source processor core IP, with emphasis on low power and embedded system design. Here the ECOS team's core development stresses PPA quality and focuses on making the cores more customisable, supporting flexible integration of accelerators and custom extension instructions. At the same time, for RISC-V's main scenarios, develop peripheral IP and the necessary compute IP — AMBA, SDRAM, VGA, UART, I2C, PWM, QSPI, embedded graphics GPU, Bluetooth, Ethernet and so on.

Open-source RISC-V high-performance IP design

On-site internships; places on both the new-graduate engineering track and the research track

The "XiangShan" open-source high-performance RISC-V processor represents the highest performance level of open-source RISC-V processor cores in the world today . Its latest tape-out, "Kunminghu V2", reaches 45 points @ 3 GHz (that is, 15 points/GHz) in the SPECCPU2006 benchmark. That performance level is already enough to compete on equal terms with the ARM Neoverse N1/N2-class cores used in today's mainstream ARM server chips (such as Kunpeng 920 and Yitian 710).

At present the "XiangShan" team is working on the next-generation high-performance RISC-V processor core for data centres, "Kunminghu V3". This version aims at the industry's top data-centre processor core, ARM Neoverse V2. The design target of "Kunminghu V3" is 22 points/GHz in the SPEC2006 benchmark, with a higher performance level and energy efficiency that is fully competitive, to further push RISC-V architecture breakthroughs in data centres, high-performance computing and other fields.

The "XiangShan" team holds to a full-stack open-source philosophy: its microarchitecture documents, RTL source code and related development platform tools are all fully public on GitHub. The project has built a highly open development team and technical community, so whether you work on advanced microarchitecture, high-performance operator implementation, memory-subsystem optimisation, multi-core interconnect architecture, vector extension (RVV) or processor security, you can find a direction in "XiangShan" that you like and that fits you.

The "XiangShan" processor is designed under the lead of the XiangShan team, with the ECOS team deeply involved in technical development and talent training.

Open-source EDA tool / toolchain development

On-site internships; places on both the new-graduate engineering track and the research track

Open-source EDA tools and toolchains matter to chips the way GCC/LLVM matters to the open-source software ecosystem. The ECOS team builds an open-source EDA toolchain covering the core steps of chip design — simulation and verification, logic synthesis, physical design, physical verification — to support the whole chip design flow. In this way, every student and chip enthusiast will in future be able to design their own chip with open-source software, get a layout and send it for fabrication. This is undoubtedly a huge undertaking. On open-source EDA alone, ECOS has already put in hundreds of people (since 2018) and written close to 500,000 lines of code; in 2023 it got the open-source EDA tool flow working end to end and released the iEDA project . For many years to come ECOS will keep improving open-source EDA in engineering quality, algorithm performance and runtime efficiency. Students interested in large software architecture, software engineering quality and program runtime efficiency are welcome to join.

This position is offered by the ECOS team. For the internship requirements, stipend, salary and so on, see the ECOS team note on internships, new-graduate campus recruitment and experienced hiring.

  • Static code analysis and certification-related coding standards (good to have).
Requirements9
  • LV3 and above, with a strong interest in low-level computer programming;
  • Proficient in C and assembly;
  • Familiar with Linux kernel and driver development; experience with Linux driver development on ARM platforms is a plus;
  • Familiar with at least one RTOS (RT-Thread / FreeRTOS / Zephyr and so on) and understand the POSIX interface model;
  • Knowledge of operating systems, scheduling and real-time systems, and understanding of how real-time metrics are defined and measured;
  • Solid computer architecture and processor knowledge: ARMv8-A / ARMv8-R, exception levels, MMU / MPU, GIC, cache coherency;
  • Proficient with small tools such as Git, SSH and bash scripts to work efficiently;
  • Basic understanding of hardware debug interfaces and debuggers (JTAG / serial port / logic analyser / oscilloscope);
  • A bachelor's or master's degree in computer engineering, electrical engineering or computer science.
Bonus points6
  • Rust, especially embedded or no_std work;
  • Exposure to any virtualisation solution (Bao / Jailhouse / Xen / KVM);
  • Hands-on experience with heterogeneous multi-core AMP architectures and inter-core communication;
  • Experience with the development processes behind functional safety or self-controlled certification;
  • Experience with static analysis tools (MISRA C, Coverity, clang-analyzer and so on);
  • A record of open-source community contributions.
What you gain1
  • Chip platform adaptation on real production projects, the full hypervisor and RTOS porting chain, and engineering Rust in safety-critical systems — this work goes straight into a customer's Safety Critical products; these are not practice projects.
